Winds: Variable direction (mostly  northerly) 20-30 mph
Seas: 1-3 near land and structures  3-5 inside the reef
Surf Temp: +/- 78  F
Viz: 10-25 feet
Not exactly what I call ideal  conditions, but you could get in the water. The water was chilly, for South Florida, anyway.  You could acclimate to the water temperature, but after a while you needed a  break. Viz was variable, depending on the tide, with low tides being the worst.  It wasn't the typical rainy Memorial Day weekend by any stretch. The full moon,  however was wreaking havoc with the current and tides. Tides were extreme high  and low, and slack was mostly non-existent (tides switched almost instantly).  Currents were probably in the 6-8 knot range. Holding a position was near  impossible to do once the tide got going in either direction.

Seas: (Saturday) 2-3 inside the reef, 2-3 outside the reef
Surf Temp: +/- 84 F
Viz: 25-30 feet
Unfortunately, due to some mechanical difficulties, we were only able to dive Saturday morning, but the morning was very nice. High tide was at about 10:30am, and we were about an hour early. We fought the incoming tide for about 30 minutes before it started to slacken up. After that we got a good 45 minutes of slack tide, where we were really able to make up some ground. We moved along quickly, as we have noticed that the fish seem to get a little scarce once the tide actually switches. We're seeing a lot more grouper this year, which is very encouraging. It really makes the increase to 24" in the size limit (about 2-3 years ago) worthwhile. We shot 3 gags and a black, and saw a whole bunch more that just didn't feel like cooperating :)..

Winds: (Saturday) Southerly 30-40 (with incessent rain)
Seas: (Saturday) Extreme chop, 5-6 (for as far as the eye could see)
Surf Temp: (yeah, like I was going to find out)
Viz: (Not sure, but if I had to guess, 2-3 inches)
Another weekend of crappy weather. This seems to have been going on forever now. Winds were blowing 30-40 mph almost straight out of the south. The seas were milk. We had whitecaps in the marina!  Needless to say, all we did was fix the boat (from last week's difficulties), and got the hell outta Dodge!

Seas: Light chop, 2-4 inside the reef, 5-7 outside the reef
Surf Temp: +/- 85F
Viz: 10-15 feet
At least we were able to salvage Sunday out of this weekend. Saturday afternoon wasn't too bad, but the boat didn't want to cooperate, so we spent most of our afternoon working on it. It rained most of Saturday and well into the night. Sunday, we awoke to clear blue skies and calmer (not calm) seas.  We headed out for a morning dive, and came back with a small catch that had a couple of highlights.

Over the weekend of March 27 th & 28 th I took the Level 1 Freediving course offered by FII (Freediving Instructors International) at their Headquarters in Pompano Beach FL. FII was started by Martin Stepanek, a multiple time freediving world record holder. The Level 1 curriculum is taught over a 2 day course. The first day is classroom and pool based and spans almost 9 hours. This course is designed for beginning freedivers and is supposed to get novice divers to a depth of 66 feet.

This year at The Blue Wild I was fortunate enough to meet Mike Hickey. I know of Mike from his appearances on Speargun Hunter on the Outdoor Channel with Sheri Daye. Mike was orginally a guest on the show and in later seasons participated as an underwater videographer. Mike is the USA distributor for FreeDivers ( FreeDivers USA ) spearfishing equipment. Believe it or not my latest addition to my spearguns is not one for shooting fish (well at least not shooting to kill them). But it hopefully will help others watch online what I love to do underwater. I have made a camera mount for my Riffe Euro guns. This mount will fit on any Euro that has the reel inserts (basically all of them). It was terribly simple to make. The only fairly tricky part was putting together the actual mount screw for the camera tripod mount itself.

Now obviously, my opinion in this matter is not one of extreme trial and error. Mostly it consists of recommendations made to me by those I spearfish with along with some of my own common sense. In the beginning (early 1990's), I used one of my brother-in-law's extra guns. Specifically, a 38" Arbalette. Now this gun had already seen finer days by the time I started using it....

After a few years' absence, we were able to make it back to Cat Cay for a family vacation this Summer. Just like our last trip , we spend the week leading up to the departure stocking up with supplies to minimize our on-island purchases (even though there are sundries on the island, they can be a little pricey), weather-watching and double checking everything possible on the boats before that (hopefully) early morning crossing.
